Von Wafer Has Worked Too Hard

Having seen Von Wafer run the floor in the D-League, I'm of the belief that he's worked to hard to get in the position he's in with the Celtics to throw it away.

So Delonte West is continuing to stay in the news for all the wrong reasons as he and Wafer had an altercation during practice. I'll take the guy that isn't wearing the ankle monitor in this one.

The "Blue Print for Success" off to a sad start

Can the Nets avoid this on Friday?
Tickets to Friday night's New Jersey Nets opening game are selling for just about $1.00. Some tickets are even going for about what you'd find hidden between your couch cushions.  There are even floor seats available for less than $50.00 bucks.  Sure the opening game is against the Sacramento Kings, another team that's not all too impressive, but on Sunday the team is taking on the Miami Heat and the seats aren't too much more expensive. Mikhail Prokhorov needs to find a way to get Nets fans back into the stadium while keeping season ticket holders interested in holding on to their seats as well.

Bud Lights on the house is a start.

Charlie Villanueva introduces fans to fantasy basketball

For those of you living under a technological cave (but still equipped with a Twitter), don't fear. Charlie Villanueva is here to rescue you.

Villanueva informed fans through several tweets that he is creating an innovate, new "league" in this strange concept called "fantasy basketball." What is this fantasy basketball you ask? Well, CV shall explain:
"For those asking
what is Fantasy Basketball? Part 1: It is like you are you own General Manager and it's played by keeping track of stats."

Wow, that's crazy! Tell me more.
"Fantasy Basketball Part 2: You keep track of NBA players you yourself actually drafted and compete based on their statistical categories."

Anything else I should know?

"Fantasy Basketball Part 3: You can create/join a league and manage your team with live scoring, stats, scout reports, injuries news, advice."

Well, this is just amazing. This has to be a new concept, right?

"Fantasy Games have been around for a long time. ESPN provides the best detailed platform to play. It's not too late to join in. Stay tuned."

So, there you have it. Fans have a chance to compete with Charlie Villanueva in some fantasy basketball. Something tells me the winner of that league will have a roster that doesn't include Charlie Villanueva.

Born Again Jazz

So long Boozer and hello Al Jefferson! Jazz fans have been thrilled to see the swift acclimation of center Al Jefferson into the Utah offense in the preseason. Further, Jefferson, or "Big Al" as he's been called recently, has developed a great friendship with all star point guard Deron Williams.

However the friendship isn't only based on the functionality of the "pick and roll" or D-Will's ability to get Big Al the ball in the post. The friendship has also been formed on religion of all things. To answer your question, neither of them are Mormon.

According to Brian T. Smith of the Salt Lake Tribune, Williams revealed to Jefferson that earlier this year he (Williams) had been baptized as a Christian. Jefferson, who had been raised Christian growing up in Mississippi, was thrilled to hear the news. “He got saved,” Jefferson said. “I didn’t know that about him. That was real good to hear. ... He said he has really done changed his life around.”

The chemistry of these two players means everything to the Jazz offense this season. If their religious beliefs can help to make this bond stronger, than they might be able to not only save their lives, but save this season for the Jazz as well.

Justin Bieber... One More Ring Than Lebron and Bosh

Let's be honest... Justin Bieber is way hotter right now than Lebron James and the Miami Heat. As if last night's garbage, schoolyard performance by the "Miami Thrice" wasn't enough to reaffirm that then maybe this will.

That is the sight of Biebs rocking Phil Jackson's championship ring. This means that the battle for the center of the universe between Lebron and Justin Bieber has now been settled by way of TKO. Would Phil Jackson let just any court-side celebrity wear his ring? Maybe Jack Nicholson, but now that Bieber has a ring this gives him one more ring than Lebron and Bosh combined.

Ring aside, after last night's loss to the Celtics, may we all finally take a step back and realize that the Miami Heat might not be the 70-win team they were promised to be. They will have to work their way into being the championship caliber of team that was predicted to just happen magically in the off-season. Let's take a closer look at what happened last night.

Rajon Rondo finished the game last night with seventeen assists. That's two more than the entire Heat team combined. The Celt's defense also held the Heat to only thirty points at the half, last season's low was thirty-three. Yet, Lebron came alive in the third quarter after putting up a disappointing ten points in the first half. When Lebron turns on, there is usually no doubt that his team will come out victorious, but this was clearly not the case here. The Heat offense is not supposed to be built around James' jumper, but that was the result of the lack of rhythm and synergy displayed by the team against Boston. Numerous times the Heat had the momentum moving down the court, but they would slow up and try to structure some offensive scheme when they should have driven the ball to the basket utilizing their speed and strength. Bosh was timid and awful, and D-Wade was slow (as expected due to his recent injury). Needless to say, the Heat need a spark.

Last night proved that Lebron's new team isn't going to work like it did in Cleveland. His 30+ isn't going to be enough to bring W's to Miami. When Bosh puts up eight and Wade only thirteen, the Heat are going to have to seek help from their "anything but deep" bench, and we all saw how that ended up for them last night. Make no mistake, the Heat will win a lot of games, they just don't know how yet.

The Lakers on the other hand played a Houston team that has historically figured out and beat up the Lakers triangle. When it seemed like the Rockets had done it yet again as the Lakers were down eleven at the half, it was time for the Los Angeles bench to step up, and step up they did. Shannon Brown and Steve Blake were a huge factor in the Lakeshow's 112-110 victory over the Rockets. Brown went 4-5 from downtown and Blake similarly went 3-5. Blake's three-pointer with 18-seconds left to go up two was the hammer in momentum change and also the two points that would hold on to win for the Lakers. With five players in double digits, including two off the bench in Shannon Brown and Steve Blake, this just goes to show the depth that is the Los Angeles Lakers.

A couple things that I noticed the Lakers will need to continue work on is Lamar Odom's early foul trouble. It was all too familiar to have nine minutes left in the first quarter and see Odom with two personals. While he did finish with fourteen and looked strong otherwise, it is necessary to get him minutes on the court and it will be hard to do that when fighting foul trouble. Also, Ron Artest's jumpshot... He went 3-15 from the field and was only 2-6 from three-point land. That many missed opportunities gives opponents that many more opportunities for possession of the ball. Ron Ron needs to capitalize on better looks at the basket and not force the deep ball. Phil Jackson is going to need to tame the wild man and tame that dang jump shot.

Not too often do we see a team early season that has the ability to fight back from a double digit deficit at the half, but this is of course the back to back championship Los Angeles Lakers. It was a great start (at home) on the "road to the three peat". Lakers- first place in the West. Heat- last place in the East. Justin Bieber- One. Lebron- None.

Crazy Fan Holds Candlelight Vigils for Kobe's Health

As Kobe Bryant rolled into practice yesterday he did his usual stop to greet fans, but this Monday brought one of the most die-hard Kobe worshippers (literally) we've ever seen. TMZ caught the whole thing on camera.

Check the link:
http://www.tmz.com/videos?autoplay=true&mediaKey=db0ed1d7-b829-480c-bb9b-f7ba2c9ddcc1

The lady seemed to just be an everyday superfan until she admitted that she had held candlelit prayers every day last week praying for his health. She exclaimed that she was not praying for a Lakers win, but for Bryant's health because basketball was his life, his soul. She was praying for Kobe's soul. The woman then went on to blabber something about her husband golfing and how she had no right (...BUT) hadn't had anything signed from him in two years.

Also notice the guy revealing his man-love for Kobe while he quickly signed his signature. What did this guy expect? Kobe to say it back?

Kobe did his best not to quote Adam Sandler from Billy Madison, "lady... you're scaring us!", but it was clearly his time to exit.

This just goes to show how athletes are portrayed in American society. Kobe Bryant, awesome basketball player, likable personality, all-time Lakers great, man crush, idol, hero, savior.

The NBA against Rondo's Headband?

The NBA updated its uniform rules for the 2010-11 season preventing players from flipping over the league-issued headbands (with the familiar Jerry West silhouette logo stitched in). Any such action is likely to result in a fine for the player. Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo maintained throughout the preseason that his lack of a headband was a personal choice and that it would likely to return for the regular season, Celtics owner Wyc Grousbek suggested during a radio appearance Tuesday that it had more to do with a league mandate preventing players from wearing upside-down headbands. Will Rondo abide by the new decree and flip over his familiar headwear, or will he continue to play without one during the regular season? We'll find out when the NBA season tips off Tuesday night with the Celtics hosting the Heat.

Knicks place ad in Nets territory

This summer Jay-Z and Mikhail Prokhorov placed an ad for the New Jersey Nets right by Madison Square Garden. The ad claimed that the dynamic duo was the "blueprint for success". It looks like the Knicks have finally struck back just in time for the new season.

Photo via Brooklyn Trolley Dodger

The poster is located at the entrance of the Manhattan Bridge. Yesterday Amare Stoudemire was Tweeting about hanging out in Brooklyn and today a giant poster of him with the caption "Brooklyn represent" debuts.  It looks like the Knicks are doing everything they can to make sure they build a fan base in the popular borough before the Nets move in during the 2012 season.

Wilson Chandler gets political

Wilson Chandler's Twitter

Coach of the Year

ESPN has released its annual awards predictions to coincide with the beginning of the new season. Interestingly, the favorite to win the Coach of the Year award this year is Jerry Sloan. He tied for the most amount of votes (5) with Miami Heat Coach, Erik Spolestra.

Now, Jazz fans are very used to hearing Jerry Sloan's name thrown into the discussion for a COY award, but of course this has yet to happen. This is due to the fact that Sloan can take virtually any group of guys and turn them into a 50 win team in the league, he has shown that he can do this with remarkable consistency. However, he has failed to get his Jazz teams over this hump and to help them reach elite status, (pardon my use of the word "elite", I know that ever since the happenings with EA's NBA Elite 11,that word has a negative vibe) and since the COY isn't a lifetime achievement award, it's hard to find a single year in which he flat out deserved to win it.

If Sloan can get the Jazz to a 2nd seed in the West, and help them finish around 55 wins or more, I could see him winning the award. The acquisition of Al Jefferson could help them get to that point, but only time will tell, and in the end, I don't think that Sloan cares about the award that much. This is, after all, the man that spends his hours on his John Deere tractor when he isn't filling his role as coach. But he does care about winning , and if he can get this Jazz team to buy into that, he could take them to next level.

MJ has this Benz, an '07 McLaren, going for $430k. No matter how many times you say you wouldn't pay that much for a whip your still wondering what it would be like to push it top speed at 209mph.

Daye makes Villanueva pay

After a disappointing 2009-10, Charlie Villanueva committed the offseason to improving his game, becoming a gym rat while staying in the metro Detroit area in anticipation of the 2010-11 campaign.

It wasn’t good enough, apparently.

Pistons coach John Kuester announced that second-year forward Austin Daye will start at the four in Detroit’s season-opener with the Nets in New Jersey on Wednesday.

Daye, who is over 30 pounds lighter than Villanueva, dazzled the Piston coaching in the preseason. His 15.9 points per game was second-best on the team’s roster, trailing only Rodney Stuckey’s 16.1 average. He also added 5.6 rebounds per contest.

Don’t expect Villanueva to be down forever, however. Unless Daye has some unknown stamina built up, it’s hard to imagine an undersized 22-year-old in his sophomore stint to meet starting requirements for 82 games. Kuester admitted this today and even hinted that Villanueva could earn his starting job back at some point during the season.

Based on today’s news, the preseason was a huge factor in determining the lineup. If that’s the case, Villanueva should still feel pretty good about his job despite losing it to start the season. He put up 12.3 points per game and added 3.9 rebounds.

Video: LeBron's Nike "What should I Do"

LeBron's new NIKE commercial is out.

So...what should he do?

What do you think?
the decision

Bring on the Real Games!

The Salt Lake Area is full of buzz right now. Not because we're known as the beehive state, or because of the surprise, early snow storm we had last night. Rather everyone is pumped for the new Jazz season beginning this Wednesday. Even more, the Jazz cruised to a perfect 8-0 record in preseason play amidst a myriad of injuries and roster changes.

So, what does Coach Jerry Sloan feel of this success? He said, "People get carried away especially in the exhibition season, about the wins. We've got a lot of work to do to be able to play like we'd like to play. I think we can be a better team, a better executing team than what we did. I think we can be a better defensive team. It's a matter of getting that done. I don't know how that will work out."

Typical Jerry Sloan. Still, the team looks extra promising, and newly acquired, fan favorite Al Jefferson has looked great so far. Here's to another great season!

Magic Johnson's Possible NFL Plans

Former Laker great, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, just sold his share of the Los Angeles Lakers along with his 105 Starbucks franchises at a ballpark of around 100 Million dollars.

As the stock certainly isn't dropping in either of his assets we are left with the question of "why?" Rumors around the NBA have circulated that Magic was looking into joining the Pistons or the Warriors new ownership groups, but the Los Angeles Times reporter, Broderick Turner, recently has pointed out that Johnson does not plan buying into the NBA franchises nor does he plan on looking at the Dodgers as a possible purchase as the McCourt divorce finalizes. So, again, we are left with the 100 Million dollar question of "why?".

With the inevitability of relocation occurring within the Chargers, Jaguars, or Raiders franchises in the near future Johnson's comments about "really, really..." wanting the NFL to come back to Los Angeles gave us enough to speculate that his newest wad of cash could mean we are a step closer to receiving a 33rd NFL franchise.

California "Governator" Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill and cut the tape on a project to begin building a new stadium in Los Angeles in 2009 that would hold over 75,000 fans and would be a perfect home to the rebirth of the NFL in Los Angeles.

The exact details of what Johnson is going to do with his money have not yet been released, but with these new rumors floating around, Los Angeles football fans can sit tight and hope that Earvin brings some more magic back to L.A..

You've probably heard about Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand.  LeGrand just started his junior year of college this year.  In a game at the New Meadowlands Stadium this month, LeGrand's world changed forever.

LeGrand was making a routine tackle when things went horribly wrong. It is likely that LeGrand will never be able to walk again.  Stories like this effect athletes on every level. It makes it even more obvious how precious life is and how things can change at any second.

The New Jersey Nets have donated 75,000 to the Eric LeGrand fund. Hopefully more teams will follow their lead and reach out.

A.I. Watch: Allen Iverson signed a deal

Just in case you were worried or wondering or concerned or...
Allen Iverson will play for Turkey this season.

Iverson
I hate that he got rejected from the association like that. Shut out Barry Bonds' style.

Here's the details on the deal:
Allen Iverson has agreed in principal to sign a two-year, $4 million contract with Besiktas of the Turkish professional league, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports.

The deal is expected to be filled with incentives.

Iverson plans to sign the deal this week and will report to Besiktas by Oct. 31.

The contract will give him an opt-out clause after this season.

We wonder if the incentives include practice?  (We just had to throw that in.)

"Someone who is the first to do it and doesn't succeed, that to me is not intriguing."

NBA players won't be wearing Concept 1's this season

Concept 1's
Here is a lesson for anyone in the market of creating an awesome product that may or may not enhance an athletes performance: don't brag about it, even if it's true.

Adam and Ryan Goldston are twins from LA who crated a "magic" sneaker called Concept 1 that can help anyone who wears them jump higher than someone wearing plain lo' Nikes. Turns out the NBA frowns upon their players using anything that may give them an unfair advantage.  Without the endorsement of athletes, it's going to be interesting to see who would actually fork over $300.00 for shoes that are not exactly aesthetically pleasing.

Lime green and black? Is their target audience the Ninja Turtles?

Lebron James sends a message to his haters via Twitter

Lebron James uses Twitter to talk to his "fans"
Lebron James has had quite an eventful summer. He went on live television to dump his hometown team, he moved to Miami, he created a Twitter account and he became one of the most hated athletes alive. Quite the accomplishment. It turns out that unlike on Facebook, the people who follow you on Twitter are not your friends.  James learned that the hard way when many angry "fans" took to the social media site to lash out at James and tell him exactly how they felt about his "decision".

A lot of the tweets sent to @kingjames included that usual immature banter used by any scorned sports fan.  They called him a "bitch", a "loser", "trader", "stupid". Most of the tweets were harmless.  There were a few references to James committing suicide which were rather tasteless, but over all they were basically just another case of people feeling more powerful behind a computer screen than they ever would in person. Would any of these people actually have the nerve to say any of these things to Lebron James face to face? Chances are standing in front of a 6'8, 250 pound man made of muscle they would feel a lot less comfortable telling James to "speaking by laying your head in front of a moving car".

There were also a few racist and just plain ignorant messages sent to James, but in the age of the internet things like that are unavoidable. Internet trolls aren't new to the internet, it would probably be better for James to simply ignore them.  Lebron James has always been a fun loving guy on the court. He throws chalk in the air before games, he dances to Eminem on the court and he has a smile on his face the whole time. If James can go back to being the guy he was before the fiasco of this summer began, I don't think he'll have much issue with these "haters" for much longer.

Shannon Brown & Monica are fed up with "the haters"

Recently R&B singer Monica tweeted a pic of her 10Carat (*wow) engagement ring given to her by her very new boyfriend LA Laker Shannon Brown. That has caused an out lash of negative comments on her twitter page by alleged disgruntle people causing the singer to delete her account.
(*clears throat)
Not that you asked me, but my opinion is these two still have that "new relationship smell" so they are going extra hard with this Bonnie & Clyde thang. Whatever she says, he co-signs and vice-versa. It's kinda cute but obviously everyone doesn't feel the same way.
She addressed her "true" fans with an explanation via twitter regarding her departure from the social network.....

Hey there. I want to thank all of u who have been so supportive of myself & family for so many years. I hate to say this But I will no longer be on twitter. I love the fact that I am able to speak to my REAL supporters but it has also become a way for people to do malicious things, when my sole intent was to spread positivity. I love u guys dearly and will find ways to stay in touch. I have dear Friends on twitter & team Monica will make sure u have all information on dates etc.
Again I love u guys but this is better for the protection of my children, my family, fiancĂ© and fans. Too much is being said that I didn’t say and for a person that believes so strongly in being 100 at ALL times. I just can’t do it. I will see all of u guys very soon. I LOVE U …Take care

Only 11 fans want free season tickets to Pistons games

It appears that adding Tracy McGrady to an already crowded back court wasn't enough to stimulate Pistons' fans senses this week.

The always witty and innovative Pistons marketing team put together another creative promotion entering the 2010-11 season, offering 50 fans free season tickets. All they had to do was head down to the Palace and audition on Wednesday, showing their team spirit and cheering prowess.

Considering the Pistons are facing an ownership change and a still-miserable Detroit economy, this seemed like a great way to raise excitement about a team that is always near the top of NBA attendance.

It didn't work.

According to Neal Rubin of The Detroit News, only 300 fans actually registered for the event, with 11yes, ELEVENpeople showing up. For a city that has almost always backed its teams through good and bad (see: Lions and Tigers) it's a wonder why no one would show up for this event, even considering the team missed the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade last season. Then again, the team did make attending all 41 regular season home games a requirement.

Either way, the Pistons are hoping for a mulligan on this one. On Friday, the team will offer fans a second chance to make the "Power Plant" cheering section before Detroit's final tune-up against Memphis. Or, as the Pistons are billing it, the "next round" of auditions.

As mentioned above, the team's marketing department has always been a cut above the rest. From the blue-collar "Going to Work" theme in 2004 to this year's DETermination (get it?) slogan, the Motor City's NBA squad has always caught the attention of its fans.

Now, it looks like fans are about as determined to support this season's campaign as Charlie Villanueva is to grab a rebound.
