Spotted: Memphis Grizzlies Have A Tea Party

Marc Gasol and Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies recently spent held a tea party at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis

Good to see that Marc and Rudy have no problem channeling the inner kid in themselves. The kids look like they had a ball.

Gilbert Arenas to the Grizzlies and his fiancé is NOT happy

Laura Govan, fiancé of Gilbert Arenas, was seen at the Grizzlies' game last night. She was sporting a rather displeased face. I guess she doesn't like that her man's paycheck won't be as fat these days. That can't be it because Arenas will still get the salary from Orlando as scheduled.

Put a smile on.
Maybe she's frowning because she's on the Grizzlies' side at a Lakers game. Not the best look since she came from Basketball Wives: LA.

Oh well, she'll live.

NBA History: Basketball on Beale Street in May

The Memphis Grizzlies were questioned about where or not they were "tanking" in the final few games of the regualr season because if they finished as the 8th seed in the Western Conference they would draw the San Antonio Spurs in the first round. "Who would do that" you ask. Head Coach Lionel Hollins (who became the franchise's all-time winningest coach this season) denied doing it but as is the case in the playoffs it's about matchups and Hollin's had to have known that is 8th seed Grizzlies matched up well with the one seeded Spurs. Hollins and his players went down in the history books in the first game by defeating the Spurs for the franchies first ever playoff win. The Grizz weren't done there as they made more franchise history while adding a chapter to NBA History.

The Grizzlies defeated the Spurs 4-2 in the first round series for their first ever franchise playoff series win and became only the fourth eigth-seed to defeat the one-seed in playoff history. Since the NBA expanded the first round series to seven games in 2003, the Golden State Warriors in 2007 were the only eight-seed to defeat the one-seed in the first round. The Denver Nuggets (defeated Seattle Supersonics 3-2in 1994) and New York Knicks (defeated Miami Heat 3-2 in 1999) accomplished the feat in a five game first round series.

Save a Gary Neal game tying three-pointer in Game 5- Memphis would have been the first ever eight-seed to defeat the one-seed in 5 games, but that didn't happen.

Beale Street has never seen basketball in May but that will change come Saturday night. What a way for a franchise to celebrate their 10th Anniversary in their current city. The Grizz moved to Memphis from Vancouver Canada after the 2000-2001 season. Prior to this years playoffs the Grizzlies were last in the playoffs in 2006 and made three consectuive playoff appearances from the 2003-2004 season to the 2005-2006 season.

Just so you know...O.J. Mayo and Tony Allen are good.

The two teammates went to practice this morning without a hitch...as if nothing happened.
They did not entertain questions from the media...so I guess they have moved on.

Mayo and Allen

Boys will be boys!

But just so you know Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins has banned gambling on team flights and hotel rooms.

"We're in a confined airplane and things get heated. I'm done with it. No more gambling," Hollins said, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "I told my guys if they read a book, that would be good. They have to entertain themselves in a different manner."
Coach Lionel Hollins

So that settles that!

News: OJ Mayo's Father Charged With Trying to Kill Police Officer

Kenneth Ziegler, the father of Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo, was arrested in West Virginia early Thursday morning after driving his vehicle into a police officer, resulting in a brief chase until his car was disabled with spike strips. He's being charged with attempted murder, two drug counts, obstruction and two fleeing counts.

NBA.com reports:

Two officers were searching for someone else at about 3:30 a.m. when they saw 39-year-old Kenneth Maurice Ziegler of Huntington in a vehicle trying to hide, police said. When they confronted him, he put the vehicle into gear, drove into one of the officers and dragged him, they said.
Police chased the vehicle for several miles through a Huntington neighborhood before disabling it with spike strips. Ziegler was captured after a short foot chase and charged with attempted murder, two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, obstructing, fleeing in a vehicle and fleeing on foot, police said.
According to police, about 85 grams of marijuana and several chunks of crack cocaine were found in the vehicle.
Ziegler was being held Thursday at the Western Regional Jail. Police say there also are outstanding warrants charging him with fleeing, driving on a suspended license and burglary.
Huntington attorney Jason Goad, who is representing Ziegler, declined to comment.
